| August 2, 2006 18:20 - Fremont Fest in Portland....
Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Well, we have an idea-- stop on over and check out the Fremont Fest! Click here to learn more about this wonderful neighborhood. Special thanks to our friends at Green Dog for the reminder and the great write-up!
"Hello! It's Fremont Fest time already! Saturday Aug 5th is Fremont Fest -
a
super fun day of celebration in Beaumont Village. If you haven't been
to a
Fremont Fest before, you should really try to come down. There will be
lots
of live music along the street, artists and craftspeople, sidewalk
sales,
face painting, horse and carriage rides, and of course the parade!!!
The
fest kicks off at 10 a.m. with a really cute neighborhood parade: about
100
kids turn out on their decorated bicycles, the Beaumont Middle School's
marching band will be playing, usually some classic cars and the Fire
Truck
join us, and of course there's the Pet Parade!! I would really love it
if
you would consider joining us to march in the Pet Parade!! Any pet that
would enjoy marching is more than welcome to join in the fun. Costumes
are
optional, but if you wear one you'll be eligible for a best costume
prize!
(Feel free to decorate their leashes or yourselves instead of your dogs
if
you like or just come as you are) Other prizes will also be awarded for
best
trick, most enthusiastic marcher, etc! I'm also looking for two kids to
volunteer to carry the Green Dog Banner - if your kids would like to be
at
the head of the pet parade representing Green Dog Pet Supply, please see the website link below. We'll be gathering between 9:30 and 10 am at
the
Beaumont Middle School, and the parade starts promptly at 10.
Then make sure you join us for our annual Fremont Fest SALE.
Everything in
the store except food will be a minimum of 15% off all day long! We'll
also
have some freebies to give away - make sure you come down and enter
your
name in the free drawing.
I hope to see you there!

Current Events
Maxfield Parrish Exhibit: Prince of Light
February 1 - August 31, 2006
- Parrish became one of America's great artists and illustrators
of the early 20th century. His art was so widely known because it
was so widely available. After training at the Pennsylvania Academy
of Fine Arts in the 1890's, Maxfield Parrish started his career by
illustrating books and magazine covers in his mid 20's. His most
prominent commission came at age 47 from General Electric for the
illustration of the 1918 Mazda Lamp Calendar. This commission
continued until 1934, and by then, millions of calendars had been
sold in the small and large poster size.

Vintage Jewelry - 19th and 20th Century Bling
March 15 - August 31, 2006
-
- Three kinds of vintage jewelry styles are on display: Arts &
Crafts, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco.
We are grateful to two collectors of rare antique jewelry from late
19th and early 20th century. Thanks to Paula Bixel for installing
the show and to "Gilt" and "Oregon Antique Jewelry" for loaning such
treasured collections.

August 22, 2006 21:40 - Portland's Ecole de Budo...
Thanks much to Michael Selin of Ecole de Budo for passing on some exciting news for St. Johns and Portland neighborhoods. Now that the summer is (ugh!) winding down, its time to start to consider "indoor fun and fitness options". We plan on checking out this great place over in St. Johns and think you should, too!
So onto some cool St. Johns news!
"Ecole de Budo in the Portland neighborhood of St. Johns offers beginner and
advanced classes to all ages in Aikido, Shinto Muso Ryu Jodo, Muso Shinden Ryu
Iaido and Ashtanga Yoga. Michael Selin and his crew at Ecole de Budo have
invested a year converting the previous Wesleyan Methodist Church buildings
(7506 N. Chicago Avenue) in St. Johns into a new neighborhood landmark. The
original church buildings had been constructed beginning in 1926. The
spectacularly remodeled facility features a martial arts studio (for Aikido,
Jodo, Iaido) in the main building and a separate Yoga studio. The grounds are
being converted to a Japanese-style garden, providing a peaceful interlude for
visitors and a pleasant addition to the neighborhood. Renovations were
completed in August of 2006 and the school is open for all students."

By the way, while we're on the subject of St. Johns-- did you know its our most popular neighborhood page? We've had over 11,000 readers so far this month and as of last count, 1000 of them came in searching for more information on St. Johns! We always knew it was the next gem...;-)
