Hillside Neighborhood GuideHillside is located in Northwest Portland. It is bordered by the Northwest and Arlington Heights neighborhoods.
Features of Hillside Neighborhood
Portland's Hillside neighborhood appears folded up and hidden like a secret. Narrow streets snake every which way, a navigator's gauntlet, and above them proud homes overlook your to and fro. Other than West Burnside on the southern boundary and NW Cornell on the north, not a single street traces a straight path. It's a good thing you brought your map!
Should you begin to feel lost, find the confluence of NW Hermosa and NW Monte Vista Terrace so that you may gaze out over the valley and know peace. Or find a place to park and wander lost on foot for a while longer, because the houses and the trees and the landscape are beautiful and go well with exercise and exploration.
At the center of the neighborhood is Hillside Park, home of the popular Hillside Community Center. Once a school in the 1940s and then an artists' co-op until the early 1970s, the center was in danger of being snatched up by a condo developer before citizens united to purchase the facility. That sums up the residents here: loyal to their neighbors and fiercely independent.
To the west is Pittock Mansion Acres, which connects Washington Park and Forest Park, and where the grand Pittock Mansion resides. There's a fee to tour the interiors of the mansion itself (but do it if you can!), but walking the grounds cost not a penny. Be sure to make your way to the east side, to take in the gorgeous views of downtown Portland and the amazing visage of Mt. Hood.
Why not stay a couple of days? Heron Haus Bed & Breakfast will put you up and feed you when you rise. You'll need your energy for hiking the Wildwood Trail through Macleay Park and northward into Forest Park. You have a full day, and more, ahead.
A gorgeous area with beautiful homes, many with a view of downtown Portland and the mountains. Residents can walk or bike to either northwest neighborhoods and downtown Portland and are neighbors to major attractions such as the Oregon Zoo, the World Forestry Center, the Portland Children's Museum, the Portland Japanese Gardens, the Portland Rose Gardens, the Vietnam Veterans and Oregon Holocaust Memorials. Forest Park, the largest urban park in the United States, is only a few minutes away by bike or foot.

Nearby you'll find the lovely Forest Park. One of the most beautiful parks in the country, Forest Park offers miles of hiking trails through lush green woodland. This park truly personifies the Pacific Northwest. Starting at NW 29th Ave and Upshur and spanning all the way to Newberry Road, Forest Park sits smack dab in the middle of Portland, literally neighboring downtown Portland. Enjoy hours of foot, bike and equestrian trails all while relaxing in the intoxicating natural beauty. Forest Park is dog friendly- your four-legged friends will love it here!
Down the hill, you'll find the hip and popular Nob Hill neighborhood, burbling with retail, restaurants, coffee shops and pubs.
