Guide to Humboldt Neighborhood

Location

Portland's Humboldt Neighborhood is bordered by Overlook, Piedmont, King and Boise neighborhoods. The Humboldt neighborhood is also extremely close to the Max line on Interstate and a quick bike ride to downtown via Mississippi Ave and the Steel Bridge.

Description

The Humboldt neighborhood in Portland can probably best be described as young, urban and hip. The streets are busied with bike traffic, foot-traffic and lots and lots of new faces. This area has quickly become a hot-spot for the 20-30ish Portland crowd looking for easy access to downtown and the ever-cool Boise neighborhood (known to most as "Mississippi"). Housing is affordable and locals love walking over the hill to Mississippi Street's Crow Bar, Gravy (fairly priced, huge portions, good food!), Equinox (higher-end yummy eats!), Por Que No?! and more.

Humboldt is known to most as an extension to the "Missisippi District" due to its close proximity to Mississippi Ave and the many shops, bars and eats just a few blocks way. The area is slowly coming into it's own-- prepare to be awed...there hasn't been a bad addition yet! Make sure to check out the Boise Neighborhood page to see the many options available to Boise locals or folks just 'stopping by'.

Homes

Humboldt homes are rather modest and not terribly "done up" but are starting to show the signs of new, young blood in the area. Creative paint schemes and landscaping are popping up slowly, but steadily. It's not uncommon to see "edibles" such as strawberries, blueberries and peppers thrown into the many-variabled garden mix. There are still affordable homes in the Humboldt area. Property values are rising steadily and most homes that go on the market are quickly snapped up. If you are looking to purchase a home in this area, make sure to be on your toes and ready to make a quick offer as Humboldt homes are highly coveted and will not stay on the market long. All in all, Humboldt is a great place for those who want the comfy feel of an older home, a sense of community and easy access to neighboring popular hoods and downtown...One estimate says property values have gone up 80% in this area, just in the last few years. A recent RMLS home search in the 97211 zip code showed homes from sale from as low as $200,000, up to $450,000. In Humboldt, you will typically find modest homes with architectural styles such as Portland's Craftsman style Bungalow, Cottages, Old Portland, Foursquare and other mid-sized, one and two story homes.

Hot Eats

Yummy tasties are just a short walk, bike or drive away...Try Gravy for the best gravy fries ever, Monsoon Thai (lovingly called Thai Laundry by locals as it's half laundromat, half restaurant!) Even the Crow Bar has some fancy new dishes that are super cheap and pleasing to the tummy. Make sure to call on Eddie's Pizza the next time you want take out...This is the best pizza in the area-- no joke! The last time we ordered, Eddie actually called us afterwards to see how everything tasted...They even deliver Breyers ice cream (with lots of flavors to choose from)! Eddie's is at 1210 N Killingsworth St, 503) 289-4700.

Coffee

The Albina Press is famous for amazing coffee.  Not only that, but they have made Portland famous for amazing coffee. The Albina Press is an art gallery turned coffee shop, thoughtfully done up with local artwork adorning the walls, leather couches, plenty of tables, free wi-fi. These coffee guru's will craft you up a cup of coffee that will make you want to cry tears of joy. This is the real deal, folks.

Located at 4637 North Albina Avenue • Portland, Oregon

Focus on…

Cascade Portland Community College. PCC has done wonders in this area. Construction has been a fact of life on Killingsworth for the last year or so and believe me, if you haven't seen the street in awhile, you will be amazed. The new PCC buildings (plural!) are so well done-- they have changed the entire look and feel of the area. Student housing is popping up, homes are being redone into duplexes, the streets are full of bicyclists and students on foot. What PCC has done for this neighborhood is so positive and has really put a feather in N. Portland's cap.

Vibe...

Artsy, earthy, and most definitely hip although the area hipsters would shy away from this claim. Bikes and scooters are more widely accepted than cars. The hood prizes diversity and the multi-cultural mix creates a real world feel, somewhat reminiscent of a New York hood. The only thing this area is missing is a Trader Joe's...
