Portland Blog: This Week in Portland February 9, 2013

Hey Portlanders!   Welcome to our weekly Portland events blog with ideas of fun things to do in and around Portland. Tonight is the third annual Portland Mardi Gras Ball.

This themed costume ball, dreamed up by Louisiana expats who miss the celebration, will take place February 9th at the Bossanova Ballroom. Doors open at 7 p.m., and music begins at 8 p.m.

And, the Krewe has something very special planned to kick things off at 8 p.m. so don’t be late!

Portland Book Review of the Day   Portland eBooks   Powell's Author Interviews

Video PDX

Written by PortlandNeighborhood Guest Writer, Rob Creighton Garrison

Whenever I'm visiting YouTube I can't help but take a look around for any new vids that Portland fans (and non-fans – there's just no defense against the surf-by looka-me clown rants) have posted. I'm like any citizen who loves his or her town, I like seeing what others love about it too, and how the media limns it.

There are the videos meant as advertisements, of course, showing all the bright-and-shiny like an animated brochure. I'm not being nasty when I say that; Portland likes to show off her best feathers like any peacock would. We have a handsome city here, no doubt.

But, you know, it does rain here. Why not show that as well? When you were a kid painting with a watercolor set, and you dipped your moistened brush into the color of your choice (say GREEN, for instance), don't you remember how that color seemed to swirl and burst alive? Rain can paint a city in any color you like, whether rendering somber tones, or sinister susurrations, or swoon-inducing romance. I think Richard Moore might know what I mean.

I enjoy ones that focus on specific features as well, such as our bridges and parks, or our markets. Our very own City of Books, Powell's, is worthy of at least a couple of videos all its own. Gawdz, but I love that new book/old book smell!

Maybe you want to get shoulder-to-shoulder amongst the throng, feel the grit of the sidewalk under your feet? This one does it in lyrical style. This is the downtown Portland I see, the one I like to show off to new arrivals and visitors. My town walks, runs, shuffles, breathes, dances, slouches, scuffs its heels, sings.

Those clips above are some of the best I've found. The one below is the pinnacle. This is the one that takes my breath away every time. How is it possible to rush and linger? They found a way, and it shines.

Did I post that one before? Hmmm...maybe? Does it matter? Regardless, there are many clips of Portland to look for. If you're like me, you never grow tired of seeking them out.
