Portland Events Blog: This Week in Portland, March 15, 2014

Hello, Portlanders and  Happy (almost) SPRING!  Only 4 days and counting, but we got a little taste of it this week with sunny skies and warmer temps.  Everywhere I walked Downtown, I saw people turning their pale winter faces towards the skies and soaking up that precious mid-March sunlight.  And the food carts at PSU were mobbed with people over lunch this week.  And let's also celebrate the pink flowering tree blossoms and daffodills which are blooming all over Portland right now.  I love this time of year!  Spring is coming, woo hoo!  And this weekend in Portland kicks off St. Paddy's day festivities with Kell's Irish Festival.

Kell's Irish Festival

Kells - 112 SW Second Avenue, Portland, OR 97204

Thousands of locals and expats will partake in live music, traditional dancing and Irish food and libations at the 23rd annual Kells St. Patrick's Day Festival, the Northwest's largest St. Patrick's Day event. This year's festival will take place March 14 through 17 at four venues: inside the venerable Kells Irish Pub at 112 SW 2nd Ave; in a festival tent in Kells' back parking lot; at the new Kells Brew Pub at 210 NW 21st Ave; and in a festival tent in the Brew Pub parking lot.

The festivities will kick off Friday night with live music in the pubs and a black tie smoker - a boxing event that pits Golden Glove boxers from Ireland against the best amateur pugilists of the Northwest - in the festival tent. Over the weekend, a number of family friendly activities will also be offered in the festival tent, including face painting, Irish Wolfhounds, cheese sampling and family tree research. Throughout the festival, attendees can enter a raffle for a trip to the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin.

Live entertainment ranges from the traditional - with Irish dancing, bagpipers, and Celtic bands playing the fiddle, harmonica, guitar and Bodhran - to the popular, with the Neil Diamond tribute band Super Diamond headlining the Saturday night event. International sensation Shana Morrison, daughter of Van Morrison, will also play throughout the weekend. Shana is known for her unique and wide-ranging voice and genre bending style that blends pop, blues, rock, country, R&B and jazz.

Festival admission varies by day and location. See the website for a complete breakdown of activities, hours, and costs per day.

Gerard and Lucille McAleese established Kells' Portland location in 1990. In 1991, they began the tradition of a St. Patrick's Day Festival that has grown into the largest Irish celebration in the Northwest. The McAleeses are some of Portland's most respected philanthropists, and the festival is an official fundraiser for Providence Child Center.

In advance of the festival, the McAleeses "sweep the ceiling," collecting folded dollars and quarters that have been hurled to the restaurant ceiling by the wait staff throughout the year. The amount of money collected is matched by the McAleeses and donated to Providence Child Center, which offers the only pediatric residential facility in the Northwest providing 24-hour skilled nursing care for children with profound disabilities and complex medical needs. Since its inception, the event has raised nearly $225,000 for Providence Child Center.

Kiss Me, I'm Drunkish St. Patty's Day Tour by Brewvana

By Brewvana:

St. Patty’s Day may fall on a Monday this year but BREWVANA isn’t letting that stop them from offering a great way to celebrate. The first stop on the tour is
Gigantic Brewing where brewers/owners Ben Love and Van Havig do only two things, “make the best damn IPA in Portland, Oregon and produce seasonal, exciting, flavorful beers, most of which will be brewed only once.” The tour will experience a stellar sampling of their best beers. Next it’s off to a brewery that has recently expanded, now occupying the entire building on NE Glisan – Migration Brewing – to sample their beer and chow down on some delicious snacks. The final stop of the tour visits Portland’s newest brewery, Stormbreaker Brewing. Housed in what was formerly Amnesia Brewing, the tour will taste what StormBreaker ‘s Angry Bob and Danny Boy have been brewing up and engage in some friendly competition with beer trivia. Tickets for the tour include roundtrip transportation, all beer and food, pretzel necklace, tasting journal and Pilsner glass. Seating is limited and reservations must be made in advance. To register, please call BREWVANA at 503-729-6804 or visit Cost: $69/person.

The calm before the BLOOM! Let's do this thing called Sprig!

Tom McCall Waterfront Park - photo taken March "2013"

I should preface by saying that YES, I snapped these photos in "2013"...alas, I hang my head in shame as I've had writer's block this ENTIRE week (I blame the nice weather, AHEM) hence being desperate about something to write about. Instead I will lament on the potentiality of possibly missing full peak foliage bloom as I will be in a different state towards the end of the month...woe is me. I'm fairly certain that all of you will not disappoint and will be able to capture many Spring blossoms for all of us to enjoy. Don't forget to share your photos with us in the photo section for your chance to win a gift card to a local business.

All that aside, I will simply give you a 'short list' of options in which to capture and enjoy all that springtime in Portland has to offer. After all it is the precursor to our long-awaited super awesome SUMMER that is just right around the corner...that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!!

Tom McCall Waterfront Park - photo taken March "2013"

For example...the photos above I was VERY LUCKY to capture last year in March from atop the bridge at Tom McCall Waterfront Park ....between Burnside Bridge and Steel Bridge. And this was only on a 'drive-by' day. I did not not capture any from the grounds of the park HOWEVER I can assure you that you will have plenty of options and angles to do that.

Tom McCall Waterfront Park

Location: Naito Pkwy between SW Harrison St & NW Glisan St

Historical Information:

"The idea for this park came at the turn of the century when the 1903 Olmsted Report pointed out the need not only for parks within the city, but for a greenway scheme for the riverbanks in order to ensure their preservation for future generations. The 1912 Bennett Plan again showed a need for more parks and river greenways, but instead of reorienting itself to the river, the city's focus was pulled further inland. In the late 1920s, the seawall was built along the Willamette's west bank for the protection of downtown from the annual floods. The seawall not only cut off the water from the people, but the people from the water as well. The construction of Harbor Drive along the west bank in the 1940s continued the trend of isolating the public from the river."

Other super cool places to check out for spring BLOOMAGE ("rachelism"):

Across from Tom McCall Waterfront Front:

Eastbank Esplanade - where you'll see the blossoms from a distance.

Location: SE Water Ave & Hawthorne Blvd

"Naturally" - The Portland Japanese Garden

611 SW Kingston Ave

Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

SE 28th Ave & Woodstock Blvd

AND if you need the blossoms to carry you into "April", check out:

Hoyt Arboretum

4000 SW Fairview Blvd

where you'll find blossoming MAGNOLIA trees and other amazing foliage.

They even have a trail named Magnolia Trail dedicated to this luscious Trillium plant that is indigenous to the Pacific Northwest. Big thanks to a new friend 'TB' for the early tip. I've added it to my list!

In closing, DO NOT FORGET:

Share your photos with us in the photo section for your chance to win a gift card to a local business.

Good luck and Happy Spring!

Best wishes for a great weekend ahead.

Cheers, Rachel
