Portland Blog: This Week in Portland, June 22, 2013

Summer!  Oh boy, oh boy, it's finally here!  Summer, which seems to last for five whole minutes, is like heaven on earth in Portland, Oregon.  Summertime in Portland offers near perfect weather, tons of outdoor events, and a lively enthusiasm and joie de vivre surely unmatched by residents in any other City.  Portlanders know how to embrace summer and squeeze every drop of energy from the rays of sunshine illuminating the leaves on the trees, paving our hiking trails in dappled light, and making our rivers and ponds so inviting and sparkly. can probably tell, I love summer in Portland!

I'm not the only one.  WWEEK published their Summer Guide 2013, which is jam-packed with things to do in Portland this summer. Summer Questing

Written by PortlandNeighborhood Guest Writer, Rob Creighton Garrison

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.

-John Lubbock

I'm all for resting. I try to practice every chance I get, which is why in resting contests I tend to place pretty high. I only fell from the Top 5 that one year because I reached for a beverage.

It's summer in Portland, and the resting is easy. Thing is, the definition of 'resting' tends to differ from one person to another. My friend Gary enjoys recreational quests for the perfect strip of bacon. David dares the savagery of a white-water beast. Angela probably whittles pool cues or crafts topiary in her back yard between seminars. My wife enjoys following me around the house correcting the placement of curios I've shifted while dusting. Me, I strive to remain a purist, eschewing anything remotely constructive, and I include eating and drinking in that.  Empty calories are restful calories.

When you have kids though, or have friends and relatives in town who insist upon drop-kicking your personal schedule out the window, sometimes you have to put your pants on and go find something for them to do. Things they like. Yeah, it's a pain, I know, but family harmony is a thing. So here's some stuff.

If you have small fry, Portland Children's Museum will wow them exponentially. All sorts of activities are available to your tykes and tots, from a Baby's Garden and clay studio to learning about dinosaurs, and digging holes, and mounting construction projects. They can even play veterinarian in a pint-size clinic, caring for furry friends (don't worry, they aren't real, so no danger of your nascent animal surgeon chasing kitties with a bone saw). Parents will love watching the youngsters play and learn as they look on, smiles frozen on their faces as they dream of margaritas and silence.

Take the shorties and your out-of-towners on a sidewalk sojourn. Portland Walking Tours provides a variety of explorations, from the sublime to the macabre. There's no better way to show off your beloved burg, and it's good exercise even if it happens to be through the concrete canyons or underground courses.

Camping! Who doesn't love camping? Of course, my definition of 'camping' is roughing it, by which I mean making it rough on your fellow campers, as in not changing clothes or shaving for days, and charred coffee and hotdogs, or just eating directly out of cans. I know I've successfully camped when the waitress at the diner on the trip back home comes to the table and immediately takes two long steps backward. The missus, on the other hand, insists upon restrooms and shower facilities. No matter. Chances are that with a little research you can find a campground that'll suit you. One of my favorite places is Silver Falls State Park, a mere hour's drive south from Portland and a camping destination that affords you whatever level of camping experience you and yours might want. Even closer is Stub Stewart State Park, forty-or-so minutes away to the northwest and a popular “dark site” for astronomers; pack some lawn chairs and tilt your head skyward, because the best show in the Universe is, well, The Universe, and you don't even really need a telescope to enjoy it.

Have to stay home? Like to swim? Well, I'm about as aquatically-enabled as a ball bearing, and to me it seems pointless to immerse myself in water when I'm not bathing, but who am I? Most people seem to appreciate pools, and the bigger the better. The City of Portland Parks and Recreation website will point you to the nearest convenient public pools, as well as the activities and programs available.

Rob's Portland Blog

Hikes and bike rides! The above-listed site also lists all the trails appropriate for both kicks and wheels. We're up to Portlandia's chin with trails, and I love taking kids and visitors on them as I show off the greenery of our favorite city. Go do likewise.

Earn your nap. Speaking of which...
