Portland Blog: This Week in Portland July 6 - July 13 2013

Welcome to another edition of our all-local Portland blog and welcome to...SUMMER. Everyone in Portland knows that summer actually starts immediately after the 4th of July and indeed, well, it's summertime, baby. You've got exactly 2.5 months to live it up. Speaking of living, last weekend I conquered the Silver Star hike. Silver Star is a grueling, near-vertical (yeah, yeah, yeah - so it seems) hike outside of the gorgeous little river town, Washougal, Washington.

The gorgeous white flowers are avalanche lilies

I had no idea what to expect. My husband read that an old, old mine was once up in thar hills and he wanted to metal detect up there. (Nerd :). I rode along, half imagining a prairie of sorts and maybe a little hike. Let's just say I was not prepared for a 1500 foot climb straight up a beast of a mountain and-- as I watched the very young and the very old trot past me like I was a sloth-- I kept going, with a smidge of true grit and pride keeping my burning legs moving. At one point, I even stumbled across a patch of snow which I used to dab my lava hot limbs and face. Snow! I kept going. I am so glad I did.

Silver Star trail

This is probably called the stairway to heaven

Somewhere about 3/4 of the way to the summit, we came across a rare zero incline trail where I found myself entranced by the thousands of wildflowers, butterflies, hummingbirds, bees and songbirds. Heaven on earth. As we pushed our way to the top, I could see why three pristine views of our magnificent volcanoes would beckon those to climb nearly 4 miles up to the top of the mountain just to see it. If I can do it, so can you. Go. Your toosh may be sore later but your heart and mind will thank you.

Summer Whine by Rob Creighton Garrison

You're not hot, are you?

Lemme tell you something, one summer when I lived in West Texas, I actually put the egg-fried-on-the-sidewalk hypothesis to the test. Worked a treat. Worked the next aftenoon, too. Week after that, same. Year after that, ditto. The point here is that it's hot all summer, BIG heat, every summer in Texas. Portland doesn't compare. Some places in the state of Oregon get a bit warm, sure. Burns, maybe. Baker City, okay. But Portland stumbles into a hot day like a tramp into the side of a Max train, not intentionally and not for long.

I once filled a pool in Dallas just by lying in the bottom. THAT'S hot.

“It's so hot!”, my coworkers used to lament, flopping around open dock doors like seals on a rock. “Are you kidding me?”, I replied contemptuously. “In Texas I never had to carry a lighter, I just touched the ends of my cigarettes to the dashboard. Nancy-boys.” But I quit smoking since then. Seriously, don't smoke.

I took a nice long walk in Abilene once, and when I got home I found two dogs and an armadillo behind me huddling in my shadow. How hot are you again?

I attended a christening for a friend's baby in Lubbock one year, but they couldn't baptize the kid. It was August, and certain members of the congregation had panicked and drank all the water.

The Sun comes out during the summer in Portland, and suddenly no one knows how to act. The temperature hits 70, everyone hits the sidewalks like the sunshine is some kind of one-day sale. It rises to 75, people start slowing down, flicking looks of concern at each other. At 77 degrees they start looking up into the sky fearfully, like they hear the hum of a locust swarm approaching. Outside the grocery store yesterday, a lady paused before crossing the parking lot to her car. She looked back at the clerk wheeling her cart along behind her and said “Is...is that sizzling I hear? My milk won't explode, will it?”. Come on, people!

You ride a bicycle at any sort of decent speed in San Antonio, Texas, you'd better have pontoons fitted because otherwise your tires will hydroplane in your sweat. People shoot at each other in hopes of catching a breeze. I remember one year in Austin, mourners rushed a burial site before the casket could be lowered, just so they could stand in the grave to cool off. The deceased had been of small stature, so a riot broke out. That's hot, my friends.

But...

As relatively cool as it can be here in the summer at times, a pet or a kid left in the car can dangerously overheat very quickly. Don't leave them in a car and don't let others do it either. Take your kids with you, and if you can't take your pets in the store, leave 'em at home in the nice air-conditioning. Report any vehicle with kids or animals left inside. Embarrassing a stranger is better than leaving their beloveds to bake. Kids and pets are cool, and they should stay that way!

Get out and enjoy summer.
