Portland Blog: This Week in Portland July 13 - July 20 2013

Welcome to another weekend and another Portland blog! If you're not at the Mississippi Street Fair today you're gonna miss out. As per every year (and it just gets better every year) there will be oodles street vendors selling crafts and other home-made goodies, great foods, beer tents, dunk tanks, fun for kids, strange and beautiful people to see-- a veritable Portlandia for you to enjoy. See you there!

In other news, the Multnomah Public Library says via Facebook: "Last year, dear patrons, you checked out and renewed 24.8 million items. That's 33.4 items for every woman, man and child in Multnomah County - making us, for the 11th year in a row, the second busiest public library in the country. Thank you." This must mean we are the second smartest city in the country, right? Right!

And last, before I unveil the rest of the awesomeness this fabulous Portland blog has in store for you, I share with you some of my favorite images from walks around the city. Portland art murals always take me by surprise when I stop to take in the richness, complexity and detailed nature of the work. How is it possible I have never seen one in action? As you will see, I have found one unfinished but never have I seen one in motion. Yet.

Nostalgia Strikes Again

More often than not I'm listening to music while sitting here at home in my office poking the pixelbeast, and much of the time it's via my favorite radio station's website KINK.fm. This afternoon, however, I thought I'd browse a few other Portland-centric radio stations, mostly because, except for Charlie 97.1 (my second-favorite station) and that other “urban beats” station that feels YOU MUST BE SHOUTED AT TO LET YOU KNOW WE ARE JUST ALL HAVING A GREAT TIME JAMMIN'!!!!!, I'm in the dark about what else is out there.

Well, and there's KBOO of course, when I want to know just how hard The Man is screwing me, and OPB Radio where a bunch of very calm people would, indeed, be happy to relate to me, in hushed tones, news pertaining to the current crises in Egypt and Syria, and every once in awhile might acknowledge the afore-mentioned unauthorized intercourse being attempted by The afore-mentioned Man. If you listen closely you can almost hear the brows knitting.

But really, that's the sum of knowledge I hold about the Portland radio scene. So I decided I would look around, see what else is available...

...and ran smack into my arch-nemesis, the devil in my ear, the bane of all that is productive and the hag that rides efficiency right outta town. Nostalgia is her name, and I'm powerless in the presence of her seductive song and colorful ( and at other times sepia-toned) graphics. She would be a worthy Doctor Who villain, a succubus who kidnaps people into the past. I could actually hear her triumphant “Ha-HA!” just as I clicked and found myself transported to the history page of pdxradio.com.

This is awesome. Decades of yesteryear an audio clip at a time. Hear Portland radio from the '50s to the '80s, listen to the reports on the Vietnam War, the Columbus Day storm, The BeeGees invasion. Olympia beer ads! Then check out the links to even more cool radio stuff.

I spent an hour and a half going from one clip to the next, but you know how one click and then another and thenanother can reveal an emerging theme? Nostalgia wasn't quite ready to release me, it seems. Three more websites popped up, and I lost another couple of hours.

Lost Oregon is an exploration of the departed past. It might make you sad and wistful at times, but it's very engaging nonetheless.

PDXHistory.Com is addictive and very well layed out. See how things were in Stumptown way back in the day.

Vintage Portland features lots of old photographs and information about the past in PDX.

And now I must close, else I'll find myself out digging a hole in the street or something. Enjoy.
