Portland Events Blog: This Week in Portland, August 10, 2013

August 10th...summer is whipping past, so I hope you have a chance to get outside in Portland this weekend and enjoy some fun activities.  I have spent the past week in Rhododendron near Mt Hood in a cabin overlooking the Sandy River. How fortunate we are to have such amazing places and scenery right at our fingertips!

The Bite of Oregon

Oregon is a state that truly has something for everyone – great food, amazing craft beer, the Willamette Valley that produces some extraordinary wines, an outdoor enthusiasts dream come true, and one of the "greenest" states in the country.

We invite you to share in all that Oregon has to offer. Spend several days tasting, sampling, enjoying our local music and watching talented chefs and aspiring chefs show off their cooking abilities with various and highly entertaining cooking competitions. Enjoy!

World Forestry Center - Ansel Adams Exhibit: Distance and Detail

It seems fitting that one of the world's finest nature photographer's would be featured here at the World Forestry Center.  Through August 18th.
Ansel Adams (1902-1984), photographer, environmentalist, and social activist, is recognized as one of America's foremost photographers. His life's work established photography as a truly legitimate art form, inspiring new ways of seeing and communicating. His long career represents a prolific and rich contribution to American culture including many hundreds of images that continue to profoundly influence the practice of the art of photography to this day.

Drawn from the art collection of Bank of America, this exhibition includes thirty of Adams’ most iconic photographs.

PDX Bridge Festival - Block Party

Celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Broadway Bridge!  Noon to 7 today, Sat August 10.

From pdxpipeline.com:

Broadway Bridge 100th Birthday Block Party on Sat. August 10th, Noon to 7pm, between NW Hoyt, Broadway, 6th and Glisan. Music stage, Lagunitus Beer Garden, Art Show, food and product vendors, Bridge Tours at 12:30 and 4pm (tickets at event) Children’s activities, Radio Disney, Clowns, the Mad Scientist and More!

The Bridge for Blankets project is part of this year’s PDX Bridge Festival, a string of events that kicked off last April and that leads up to a block party on August 10th from 12pm-7pm, at NW 9th and Hoyt. This is a fitting art installation to celebrate the Broadway Bridge’s 100 year presence and what it brought and brings to the fabric of Portland. Opening up the bridge between the music and clubs of the east side to the exotic life and associations of the west side in addition to the cuisines of both, enhanced this city’s development. We are a better place to live because of it.

Carting Around

Written by PortlandNeighborhood Guest Writer, Rob Creighton Garrison

You have guests coming into town soon. They have an agenda.

“Please”, they fairly scream down the phone, “before we leave Arreegawn to come back home, please take us to eat at some of those wonderful food carts you have! We hear so much about those! Unless it's raining, we don't like to be wet when we're eating, except if maybe you have some umbrellas?”

You explain patiently that shipping umbrellas into Oregon is prohibitively expensive and that most people just can't afford the $4000 price tag for one, but there are usually awnings and bumbershoot-protected tables – or the awnings of nearby businesses if you don't mind the occasional spate of fisticuffs. Also, you remind them, it's August and almost no chance for rain although there's a higher probability that they'll encounter the pale, dessicated husks of citizens lying in the streets, the poor buggers having been caught out in direct sunlight. Still, with the proper precautions there's no reason why a day touring the food stands can't be had.

Portland Food Carts

"Salad roll?  What the Hell is a salad roll?"

Satisfied, they ring off, and as you pocket your phone you ponder the coming week's itinerary. Where in the city is best to take them on their gustatory gallivant? You have yourself sampled far from all, or even a tenth, of the fare to be found curbside in the city. There's the lip-smacking adventure of Good Food Here on Belmont, many delectable tidbits to be had at that pod! Only a short stumble down the walk to Pied Cow for brewskis and coffees too. Hmm.

Portland Food Carts

Oh, but can't forget Cartlandia! That's a thought, rent a couple of bikes for your guests and show them the splendid Springwater Corridor Trail. Ah, but do they ride? Can they ride? You recall them being rather clumsy. Still, file it as a possibility.

Downtown? Well, they are country mice, but they may appreciate seeing the hustle-bustle (well, for “Arreegawn” anyway) of the Big City. Show them the Central Library, Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Portland Art Museum. If you blink too slowly you'll trip over cart after cart after cart down there, too. It's a plethora, El Guapo!

Tsk. How to decide?

Aha! Consult the Oracle, wag your fingers over the sacred tablet and...Food Carts Portland! The majickelectric boon to every food cart-loving soul. Info! Maps! TOURS! Zut alors!

All set. And then Wednesday show them our volcano and some roller derby.
