Portland Events Blog: This Week in Portland, August 24, 2013

Hello, Portlanders.  Our weekly Portland events blog gives you the rundown of fun things to do in Portland each week, and this last week of August is no exception.  Get outside and enjoy the sunshine and one of these great Portland events!  It's already time for SE Sunday Parkways, Oregon State Fair, Festa Italiana, and lots more:

SE Portland Sunday Parkways

From PortlandOregon.gov

Sunday Parkways comes to Southeast Portland this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., opening nine miles of city streets to traffic free bicycling, walking, strolling and entertainment.   The hugely popular event is free and is expected to draw about 25,000 participants in addition to involving hundreds of volunteers.

Sunday Parkways is a series of five free community events held monthly from May through September that open the city's largest public space – its streets – for people to walk, bike, roll and discover active transportation. Each Sunday Parkways takes place in a different neighborhood to spread the fun throughout the city.

The nine-mile southeast Sunday Parkways route offers all the usual fixings and entertainment that make Sunday Parkways one of Portland’s most popular summer events.  Music, vendors, Zumba and yoga classes will be available in the parks along the route.

The SE Sunday Parkways route connects Colonel Summers Park, Laurelhurst Park, Mt. Tabor Park, Ivon Park and Universal Cycles activity area. Participants will also travel along four neighborhood greenways – Ankeny, Clinton, Lincoln and Salmon streets -  which are quiet neighborhood streets that are designed bicycle routes and offer people a less trafficked route than nearby arterial streets.

This mostly-level tour asks participants: What are the Olmsted lessons for the 21st century? Along the way you’ll explore these great places: the Springwater Corridor, Ross Island Park, Sellwood Park, Sellwood Bluff Parkway, Eastmoreland and Reed College Place, Reed College Campus, Kenilworth Park, Laurelhurst Park, Dr. James Hawthorne Gravesite, Ladd Circle, and Ladd/Elliott boulevards.

The tour ends at the lost 1907 site of Hawthorne Park and Asylum Creek. Tour-goers are then invited to the nearby Madison’s Grill, at SE 11th and Madison for an optional no-host gathering to discuss Portland parks, past and future, right where the former 25-acre Hawthorne Asylum grounds once stood. Tour guides Steve Dotterrer and Richard Ross have worked for several decades as Portland region planners, historians, and preservationists. Maps will be provided.

Last Chance! TREK IN THE PARK: The Trouble with Tribbles!

Only one weekend left! AUGUST 24-25

That’s Saturday and Sunday at Cathedral Park in St. Johns.

Trek in the Park’s Five-Year-Mission CONCLUDES! Over the last 4 summers, Atomic Arts has energized Portland to strange new worlds where no audience has gone before and it has all led to this–THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES!

As Kirk and his crew attempt to settle a political dispute on a far off space station, they quickly realize their problems don’t stop there as they have to deal with Federation brass, tempestuous Klingons, and tiny, furry creatures who are adorable, hungry and…multiplying.

Portland actors accompanied with live music and effects bring this classic piece of pop culture to life at historic Cathedral Park under the St. Johns Bridge!

FREE TO THE PUBLIC. ALL AGES WELCOME.

Saturdays and Sundays at 5:00pm at Cathedral Park Amphitheater

(The amphitheater is located under the St. Johns bridge at the corner of N Pittsburgh in N Portland)

A Season's Flirtation

Written by PortlandNeighborhood Guest Writer, Rob Creighton Garrison

I know this must be my imagination. It's too early yet, only the late middle of August!

But I caught a brief...something...in the air this morning. Out of the corner of my eye, a leaf falling from a tree near my car as I unlocked it for my short commute to work this morning. Leaves fall all the time, yes it's true, but this one seemed to sail, to swing, arc one way upward, pause, and then downward only to swoop higher in the opposite direction, all the way to the ground. No humid thud, just a gliding silence into the waiting cradle of grass.

                                                                   photo:  oregonlive.com

In my nose, a slight sharpness a hint of earth, a coolness. It wanted chimney smoke and the scent of dry leaves, like a recipe missing a subtle yet vital ingredient missed only after it's tasted. You know when you try to smell something and it eludes your efforts, then comes back when you stop trying? Like that.

On my skin a breeze, brief and brisk only as a memory, a hint of a memory. I thought of my yellow jacket hung on its hook just inside the front door, the one I often wear when riding my bicycle later in the year. But it isn't later in the year. It's still August, as I said, as you know.

The Oak King and the Holly King  (photo: http://salemsmoon.files.wordpress.com/)

This feels like being unfaithful in a way. Or maybe it feels more like I might have in elementary school, walking away from one friend on the playground, leaving him alone while I go talk to another friend instead, or another kid I want as a friend. Doesn't feel nice. Not kind, not proper.

Because this has been a nice summer. It hasn't gotten too too warm (for me), all the lawns haven't turned brown, it hasn't so far even approached the level of humidity that might cause a weather forecaster on the news to use that word “sweltering”, that word that carries its own weather with it. It's been, at least for we here in the embrace of the valley, a very respectful season overall, the sort of summer that would hold the taxi for you or save you a seat on the MAX several rows distant from the sleepy gabby drunk.

So why do I pine for autumn so?
