Portland Blog: This Week in Portland October 26 - November 2 2013

Another beautiful October week in Portland under our belt and this here Portland blog marks the last weekend you have to get ready for Halloween! Alright friends, here is how you get started:

1. Don boots, jeans, sweater

2. Hop in car or on bike and head down Lombard

3. Stop at Krugers farmers market

4. Obtain beer from Captured by Porches and delicious chowder (with bacon!) from Chowda!

5. Relax, people watch. Visualize the perfect pumpkin. Think of other fruits and vegetables you might need.

6. One more beer.

7. Now you're off to the pumpkins where you'll snag the best of them. Grab a few ears of decorative corn. The squirrels will love you for it.

8. Arrive at home and immediately carve pumpkin because you need instant gratification. It's best if you engage in a pumpkin carving contest so might as well re-read #1 and be sure to bring a friend or spouse. Bet the house on it. Go for it.

9. Scoop and separate pumpkin seeds from punkin-parts.

10. Obtain one cookie sheet and one large bowl. Heat oven to 375.

11. Add pumpkin seeds to bowl with a few tbs of olive oil, sea salt, pepper, cumin and cayenne pepper. Mix well and spread seeds across cookie sheet. Bake for 45 minutes.

12. Best day award goes to you! You have the coolest pumpkin on the block, drank some beer, the chowder still has you feeling warm and happy and the pumpkin seeds taste DELISH! Now go light your pumkpin up and enjoy your day.

Spooky Spots by Rob Creighton Garrison

Bella approaches every party with the zeal of Patton crossing the Rhine, and never more so than when it's a Halloween party.

See all that? That is why we can only seat three people comfortably at the dining room table without someone dislocating a hip. As I write this, said party is still two days away, but it's been a physical entity in our household for two weeks already. I'm thanking the godz that our living spaces won't be the locus of this festival of orange-frosted frights; instead it'll be held in the rec room across the lawn. Still, one of the only two available bathrooms is our own, so I'll be hiding out here in my office with the door firmly shut. I know that'll be fine with Bella, since in her mind adults really only serve as handy catapults with which to loft herself and her friends into Party Nirvana, and should otherwise be considered dangerous apparati best kept covered in a cool, dry place.

What are y'all doing for Halloween? If you're at loose ends, or don't fancy having to open your door repeatedly to the ghouly shorties, Portland Walking Tours offers the Beyond Bizarre Ghost Tour. Led by bona fide paranormal investigators, the tour visits several of Portland's spooky spots where you'll be given real ghost hunting equipment with which to probe the dark corners under the care and tutelage of the experts (but do yourself a favor, though, and take along whatever accoutrement you deem suited to the scene: crucifixes, cloves of garlic, salt, needle and thread, whatever. Just don't tell them I told you to).

Of course you could go it alone. Take an after-dark walk on Southwest Stark Street beyond 2nd Avenue toward the river, to see what's to be seen...or not seen.

Have a slice at Old Town Pizza and perhaps a chat with Nina the resident prostitute ghost. Not that she's still a prostitute, or at least I hope not.

Get a room at the Benson Hotel , or the Heathman (number 1003, maybe?), see if you close more than one eye at a time.

Or spend some time in Lone Fir Cemetery, where almost half the graves' occupants remain anonymous. Pause, reflect upon morality. Yours, f'r'instance.

Happy Halloween.
