Portland Events Blog: This Week in Portland, November 30, 2013

Hello, Portlanders.  What a lovely month of November we've enjoyed!  I hope everyone enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving holiday.  If you're in the mood for holiday shopping (and it's crazy out there), please remember to also support our local economy and small businesses.   Visit one of Portland's favorite shopping districts (public transportation might be a good idea - parking is challenging).  Hawthorne, Belmont, Pearl District, Downtown, Mississippi Avenue, Alberta Street, N Williams Ave. FoPo, Sellwood, Clinton, Hollywood,  Beaumont Wilshire, St. Johns--just to name a few neighborhoods worth a stop.  Portland has a ton of great indie shops, businesses, and locally owned restaurants to enjoy.   Of course, a trip to the Portland Saturday Market is always a great place to find cool handcrafted gifts.  And, don't leave  out a trip to Powell's City of Books.

Portland Holiday events are gearing up Downtown.  Pioneer Courthouse Sqaure hosts the Holiday Ale Festival next weekend.  Tons of holiday choirs and more Pioneer Courthouse Square events can be found at

Holiday Fest on Fremont

The entire month of December will be special for families in NE Portland, as Beaumont Village hosts the new Fremont Holiday Fest.
Sponsored by the Beaumont Business Association and participating merchants, Fremont Holiday Fest includes a new Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, a new Golden Ticket Holiday shopping program, as well as music, entertainment, family fun and, of course, the traditional Children’s Visit With Santa.  The Children's Visit with Santa on will be Friday, December 6th. Santa will arrive at Grand Central Bakery aboard a Portland fire truck at 5:00 pm. Santa, accompanied by Mrs. Claus, will visit with children until 9:00 pm. Photos of youngsters with Santa will begin at 5:30 pm. Families can reserve a time slot for their children to visit Santa and get a photo by registering on-line at:

An exciting new feature for the community this year will be a beautifully lighted outdoor holiday tree located at The Arrangement and sponsored by Umpqua Bank. A tree lighting ceremony will be held at 6:00 pm on Friday, December 6th. Umpqua Bank will also be offering Golden Tickets to those who donate a children’s book on December 6th. Golden Tickets may be earned and redeemed for gifts and discounts at participating businesses throughout the month of December.  Discounts can change daily so to stay up to date on what going on, follow your favorite local shops on Facebook.  For more information on the Golden Ticket program feel free to ask any of the participating businesses.

Farewell November

By Rachel Carlson

as the last leaf falls to the ground...

I write this on a day of THANKS. As we usher another holiday out so too we say farewell thee November. Just the other day I admired all the lonely leaves left on trees that are about to land on the ground. Don't get me wrong, we've had an amazing display of autumn foliate yet so too must the lonely leaves be put to rest for the season.

It has been a pretty SUNNY November in the Pacific Northwest....true story!! Although I was bit disgruntled with the time change, the sunny days made up for it. Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE fan of rain, that of which 7, 8, 9 months (take your pick) is about to commence. In fact, last November I recall marveling at how many sunny days we enjoyed as the months of impending rain (AHEM, mist), gray and so forth looms over all the land in the PAC-NW. At which point someone in the group I was with that day says: "I'll give you 3-5 years Rachel, tell me how you feel about the rain then"...that's fair after all. Let's not fret, so many good things accompany our upcoming months of notable reputation as the EVERGREEN state. See how I did that, there IS a reason the land is so soft, so mossy and so green after all. That said,, embrace it full on and for crying out loud bring on the FREAKIN' rain!!

The good things you ask:  (all of which I will be partaking in or have already done so):

--Where to watch THE coolest Northwest storms - trust me, I can confirm this one.

Storm Watching in the Pacific Nortwest

because even in winter we have some pretty amazing sunsets.

--Where to find the best trails to hike in winter - YES, you 'can' still get OUTDOORS in the rainy months.

Trails for Wintertime

*I promise it doesn't hurt to get outdoors....even in winter, if anything you'll have the trail all to yourself"

--AHEM, how to fall in winter...this is an added bonus for you....I'm a professional faller after all.

How to Fall Right

--Where to meet like-minded people.

Portland Hikers

*THIS year perhaps I'll be brave enough to attend the holiday party*

--Where to brew your own beer - YEP, it's time to join the masses of craft beer peeps. After all, you'll need the fruits of your labor in preparation for summer....DUH.

Portland U-Brew & Pub

--Where to take your dogs and still be indoors - because I have clients that DO allow this.

Lucky Lab Brewing Company

*my fav location being SE Portland on Hawthorne* - you're welcome!!

--Where to find the best raincoat. OKAY...I made that one up but if you show up with your umbrella we will turn you away.

So then, the next person that might want to complain directly to my face about our impending AMAZING months of 'mist', I'm going to have you refer to the aforementioned. Please won't you join me in all that is good in the Pacific Northwest...let us begin again!!
