Portland Blog: This Week in Portland December 21 - December 28 2013

Welcome to another Portland blog and to another weekend. It's not just ANY weekend either -- it's "the weekend before Christmas" weekend! We are delighted that Christmas is just a few days away!

Our holiday plan is simple: Get up, make coffee, go for a hike, count our blessings and drink in the chilly, delicious pacific northwest air. Come home, put a turkey in the oven and turn on our favorite tunes. Have a few friends join us for a wonderful meal and watch some great old holiday movies. National Lampoons, anyone?

We hope you have a safe, happy, healthy and totally wonderful holiday with your friends and family. Cheers!

    Winter Wonderland Warnings (?)

    by Rachel Carlson

WELL, not 'that' kind of winter wonderland... ah, but I digress.

When I moved here in winter of 2011 I was told NOT to go out when it snows. I simply responded with "I just moved here from Colorado where I experienced the 100 year blizzard, I got this" and the usual response was "OH,'re good....BUT it's Portland, we don't know how to drive in this stuff and the city SHUTS DOWN".....true story!! It was a 'light' dusting that year. The city owns very little equipment to clear the roads after all. And they weren't kidding, people can NOT drive in this stuff.

Fast forward two years and now starting my third winter in Portland. I GET IT.....I sincerely do. We have had a few more light 'dustings' (that's my story and I'm stickin' to it) and I'm waiting till it gets REALLY cold. Frigid temps make for frosty roadways, black ice, dangerous driving conditions and the like.

Even my favorite season of fall leaves are looking a bit CHILLED.

All that aside, I offer some safety tips and resources:

-Stay put if you can arrange it. (YEP, I'm actually declaring it PUBLICLY that you STAY PUT).

-Leave a few hours later than usual. This way other people have 'carefully' forged the path ahead of you.

-BRIDGES......and you know we have a LOT of them. We are all fully aware that bridges do not have insulation below and are the slickest piece of roadway out there. TRUST ME on this one as I don't proclaim things without having not either researched them OR experienced them myself. GULP.

    -OH, that said....stay OFF bridges.

-Yaktrax or heavy duty rubber soled shoes with nubs work best on trails, sidewalks, etc. THIS point is very specific to me as my client animals do not care if it's cold, slippery or the like....a walk is a walk to them.

AND, if you really must be out and about, please check your local resources and plan ahead BEFORE you get out on the roads. This will ensure that you keep your fellow Oregonians SAFE during the winter season.

It's simple: when in doubt, STAY PUT.

Alas, WHY am I sharing all of this....WELL, winter is only just beginning. Stay warm, stay safe.

Wishing you all a happy Winter Solstice ahead and best wishes for a lovely holiday season in a world filled with peace.
