Portland St Patrick's Day Events

Portland St Patrick's Day Events  Ahhhh lads and lassies, St. Paddy's is upon us and we want to help you paint the town green!  In our annual PDX St Patrick's Day events and ideas list, you'll learn about the history of this fine holiday, the best place to get your drink on, where you might find some good Irish fare and where the events are!

Portland St Patrick's Day Events - Just a little history

St Patrick's Day or Lá Fhéile Pádraig is a holiday that falls on the 17th of March. It is named after Saint Patrick (circa AD 387–461), one of the most popular patron saints of Ireland. It began as a purely Catholic holiday and became an official feast day in the early 17th century.

The original color associated with Saint Patrick was blue but over the years the color green has taken its place as the Irish identified green with many of St Patrick's teachings. He was known to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the Pagan Irish. As such, the wearing of the green and the display of shamrocks have become associated with this holiday to present day.

While originally a secular holiday celebrated by Irish Catholic, St Patrick's Day is now celebrated in huge numbers across the world. St Paddy's is one of the busiest days of the years for bars and restaurants and is said to be one of the highest alcohol consumption days of the year.

A Locals Tip- The Best Corned Beef and Cabbage

If you want to prepare a feast to celebrate St Patrick's Day, we highly suggest picking up a corned beef (and cabbage) from local Portland meat market and grocer, Sheridan's. They prepare what most definitely is Portland's finest corned beef - all you have to do is cook it and bask in the glow of the compliments you'll receive.
